How can central banks support the transition to Net Zero? \nThe discussion will start at 6.45pm and will be preceded by a networking reception. \nElisabeth Stheeman is an external member of the Bank of England’s Financial Policy Committee (FPC) and Financial Market Infrastructure (FMI) Board. \nShe has been a member of the Supervisory Board of Aareal Bank AG\, the deputy chair of the Risk Committee and a member of the Technology and Innovation Committee since 2015. She has been a member of the Board of Edinburgh Investment Trust plc since 2019 and Chair Elect since 2021. She has been an external member of the Audit and Risk Committee of AIIB (Asia Infrastructure Investment Bank) since April 2021 and a member of alstria AG’s Supervisory Board since May 2021. \nPreviously\, Elisabeth was a Senior Advisor to the Bank of England’s Prudential Regulation Authority (2015-18). In this role she focused on governance across the UK’s financial services sector. \nDr Harald Heubaum is Senior Lecturer in Global Energy and Climate Policy at the SOAS Centre for International Studies and Diplomacy (CISD) and Deputy Director and Co-founder of the SOAS Centre for Sustainable Finance (CSF). He is Director of the climate and sustainable finance initiative SUFINDA C.I.C. headquartered at the CSF and serves as Contributing Author to the upcoming Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Sixth Assessment Report (AR6 WGII). \nHarald’s research interests include organizational change and innovation in global energy\, climate and financial governance\, climate and sustainable finance\, decarbonisation of transport and resilient infrastructure. SUMMARY:The Wirecard Scandal: Dan McCrum in conversation with Elisabeth Stheeman
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Tuesday 14 June at 6.45pm BST on Zoom for a conversation between Dan McCrum and Elisabeth Stheeman about the Wirecard scandal. \nDuring what has been described as “the financial investigation of the decade”\, reporter Dan McCrum uncovered one of the biggest economic scandals in Europe. Wirecard began as a financial services start-up and soon overtook industry giants such as Deutsche Bank on the stock market. After years of McCrum’s relentless pursuit\, the tech firm declared bankruptcy in 2020. \nDan McCrum and Elisabeth Stheeman will take us into the world of Wirecard’s multi-billion-dollar fraud\, with stranger-than-fiction stories of short sellers\, whistle-blowers\, hackers\, spies – as well as directors\, auditors\, courts and regulators. \nDan McCrum is a member of the Investigations team at the Financial Times\, where he has worked for 15 years writing about business and finance. His reporting on Wirecard has been recognised with more than a dozen prizes\, including journalist of the year at the 2020 British Press awards. His first book\, about the company’s unbelievable rise and crashing fall\, has been published as House of Wirecard in German and will be released as Money Men in English on 16 June. \nElisabeth Stheeman is an external member of the Bank of England’s Financial Policy Committee (FPC) and an external member of the Bank of England’s Financial Market Infrastructure (FMI) Board. \nShe has been a member of the Supervisory Board of Aareal Bank AG\, the deputy chair of the Risk Committee and a member of the Technology and Innovation Committee since 2015. DESCRIPTION:Our conversation with author and journalist Philip Oltermann\, which was due to take place at 8pm on 24 May\, has been postponed. We will let you know as soon as we have a new date for the event. \nPhilip Oltermann was born in Schleswig-Holstein in 1981. He studied English and German literature in Oxford University and University College London before beginning a career in journalism for both German and English-language media. He has written for Granta\, the London Review of Books\, and the Guardian\, for whom he is the Berlin Bureau Chief. His first book\, Keeping Up with the Germans\, was published in 2012. \nHis newly released book\, The Stasi Poetry Circle\, tells the extraordinary true story of how a group of soldiers and border guards gathered for monthly meetings at a heavily guarded military compound in socialist East Berlin to learn how to write lyrical verse. \nIn 1982\, East Germany’s fearsome secret police – convinced that writers were embedding subversive messages in their work – decided to train their own writers\, weaponising poetry in the struggle against the class enemy. Using first-hand accounts and exclusive interviews\, Oltermann’s unconventional group biography charts the history of the German Democratic Republic from its utopian origins to its descent into a paranoid culture war: a literary detective story filled with spies who were moulded into poets; poets who spied on fellow writers. \nThere will be an opportunity to ask questions at the end of the conversation.

Before joining the Embassy\, she was the Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s Deputy Political Director (2018-2020) and Director of Human Resources (2014-2018). From 2011 to 2014 Jill served as British Ambassador to Portugal. \nSince joining the Diplomatic Service in 1991\, her career in the Foreign\, Commonwealth and Development office has focussed on Europe with postings in Prague\, Madrid and at the European Commission in Brussels. She has also had a wide range of jobs in London\, mainly working on the EU and wider Europe. \nJill Gallard grew up in Northern Ireland and is married with two children. She studied French and Spanish at Edinburgh University. The talk will be moderated by Dr Kennetta Perry. \nDr Tiffany Florvil is an Associate Professor of 20th-century European Women’s and Gender History at the University of New Mexico\, USA. She has published pieces in the Journal of Civil and Human Rights and The German Quarterly. Florvil has also coedited the volume\, Rethinking Black German Studies: Approaches\, Interventions and Histories (2018)\, as well as published chapters in Gendering Post-1945 German History (2019) and To Turn this Whole World Over (2019). She published her manuscript\, Mobilizing Black Germany: Afro-German Women and the Making of a Transnational Movement (2020)\, with the University of Illinois Press\, and it offers the first full-length study of the history of the Black German movement of the 1980s to the 2000s. She is also an editor of the “Imagining Black Europe” book series at Peter Lang Press. \nDr Kennetta Perry serves as Director of the Stephen Lawrence Research Centre at De Montfort University where she is also a Reader in History. Prior to her appointment at De Montfort\, she was an Associate Professor of History and Co-Director of the African & African American Studies Program at East Carolina University\, USA. Her research interests include Black British history\, transnational race politics\, Black women’s history\, archives of Black Europe\, and anti-racist movements for citizenship\, recognition and social justice throughout the African Diaspora. She has more than 15 years of experience in the field of social science and political consulting and has published numerous studies on politics\, society and election campaigns. Jana has co-authored ‘Aus Fehlern lernen’ (‘Learning from mistakes’)\, the analysis of the SPD election campaign 2017. \nChristian Stecker is a visiting professor at the TU Darmstadt and a research fellow and project director at the Mannheim Centre for European Social Research. His research focuses on the design of democratic institutions and government formation in Germany and beyond. \nEd Turner is Reader in Politics at Aston University and Co-Director of the Aston Centre for Europe. He is particularly interested in German politics\, especially political parties and federalism\, and also politics in the UK and in comparative perspective. DESCRIPTION:Join us on 1 June 2021 at 5pm BST for an online interview with HE Andreas Michaelis\, German Ambassador to the UK\, ahead of the 2021 G7 Summit. \nHE Andreas Michaelis studied political sciences\, philosophy\, English\, and economics. He joined the German Foreign Service in 1989. After working as Private Secretary to Helmut Schäfer\, Minister of State at the Federal Foreign Office\, he took over the position as First Secretary Political Affairs at the German Embassy in Tel Aviv. He worked as UN Director-General and as Spokesperson of the Federal Foreign Office before he became German Ambassador to Singapore from 2002 to 2006. He was appointed Director for Asia and the Pacific and later Director for Near and Middle Eastern Affairs and the Maghreb. After serving as German Ambassador in Tel Aviv\, he became Political Director in July 2015. From 2018 to 2020\, he was Permanent Secretary of the Federal Foreign Office. DESCRIPTION:The British Chamber of Commerce in Germany (BCCG) has kindly given BGA members the opportunity to join their upcoming SHeconomy Virtual Talk with former BGA Trustee and Executive Committee Member Dr Heide Baumann. The talk will take place on Friday 7 May from 11am to 12.15noon BST. \nDr Heide Baumann joined the Vodafone Germany Executive Committee on 1 April 2021 to lead Commercial Operations and champion customer excellence. Prior to joining Vodafone\, Heide was Chief Transformation Officer at Microsoft Deutschland\, leading cultural change across the German sales and marketing organisation for greater customer focus. Before that\, she was responsible for the customer experience transformation\, enterprise revenue growth and the integration of mergers & acquisitions at Liberty Global. Between 2004 and 2015 Heide held a broad range of leadership roles at British Telecom\, where she led customer service teams across 17 countries and the transformation of the Group’s operating model. Before that\, Heide Baumann was a management consultant for innovation and digital strategies at Arthur D. Little. As a non-executive\, Heide is a Council Member of the international affairs think tank Chatham House. \nHeide grew up in the Baden region of Germany. She studied engineering in Leipzig and completed her BSc at Hertfordshire University\, followed by MAs in media from the Royal College of Art\, London and TU Berlin as well as an MA in Psychology from De Montfort University\, Leicester. Most recently\, Heide completed a PhD on the discourses of female corporate leadership at the University of Cambridge.
