SUMMARY:The COVID pandemic in the UK and Germany: comparing responses
DESCRIPTION:COVID-19 has had a far-reaching impact on public health\, the economy\, politics\, and society. Globally\, countries are still learning to deal with and control the pandemic. \nAt this BGA event\, Professor Matthew Flinders and Professor Anna Holzscheiter will examine the UK’s and Germany’s comparative responses to the COVID crisis. The discussion will be chaired by Stefanie Bolzen. \nProfessor Flinders is Professor of Politics and Founding Director of the Sir Bernard Crick Centre for the Public Understanding of Politics. He is also President of the Political Studies Association of the United Kingdom and a board member of the Academy of Social Sciences. \nProfessor Holzscheiter is Chair of Political Science with a focus on International Politics at the TU Dresden. Parallel to her professorship at the TU Dresden she heads the research group ‘Governance for Global Health’ at the Social Science Research Centre Berlin (WZB). \nStefanie Bolzen is the UK and Ireland Correspondent for German WELT and Sunday edition WELT am Sonntag. SUMMARY:The road to 1990: German reunification
DESCRIPTION:Online event – A discussion with Timothy Garton Ash\, Charles Grant and Helene von Bismarck on the run-up to German reunification in 1990 \nTimothy Garton Ash is the author of ten books of political writing or ‘history of the present’ which have charted the transformation of Europe over the last half century. He is Professor of European Studies at the University of Oxford\, Isaiah Berlin Professorial Fellow at St Antony’s College\, Oxford\, and a Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution\, Stanford University. His essays appear regularly in the New York Review of Books and he writes a column on international affairs in the Guardian which is widely syndicated in Europe\, Asia and the Americas. \nCharles Grant is Director of the Centre for European Reform\, which he helped found in 1996. He works on\, among other subjects\, EU foreign and defence policy\, Russia\, China\, the euro and Britain’s relationship with the EU. During the time of German reunification in 1990 he was bureau chief of The Economist in Brussels. \nHelene von Bismarck is a historian\, writer and commentator. She has published a book about British foreign policy in the Persian Gulf during the 1960s\, as well as a History of the Anglo-German Königswinter Conferences. Her political commentary has featured in The Times\, Die Zeit\, Foreign Policy\, and the BBC. DESCRIPTION:Ernest Bevin and the founding of the German Federal Republic \nErnest Bevin was the towering Foreign Secretary of the postwar Labour Government. In this event hosted by the BGA and the German History Society\, Lord Adonis\, himself a former Labour Cabinet Minister\, debates Bevin‘s enduring influence on modern Germany with fellow Bevin expert Professor Anne Deighton. \nLord Adonis is a Labour peer and formerly Secretary of State for Transport\, Minister for Schools\, Head of the No.10 Policy Unit\, and senior No. 10 adviser on education\, public services and constitutional reform. He pioneered key public service reforms including the Academy programme\, Teach First\, and the plan to develop a high-speed rail line from London to northern England and Scotland. \nLord Adonis’ biography Ernest Bevin: Labour’s Churchill looks at Bevin’s central role in the creation of many of the international institutions which shape our world today. \nAnne Deighton is Emeritus Professor of European International Politics in the Department of Politics and International Relations at Oxford and a Fellow of Wolfson College\, Oxford. Professor Deighton works on a number of themes relating to the contemporary history and political integration of Europe. A new research project relates to cultural activities and political power in postwar Britain. \nOn more contemporary issues\, Professor Deighton has published on European security institutions; the genesis of human rights issues; and the use\, and abuse\, of military force in the contemporary world. \nThere will be an opportunity to ask questions of the speakers after the discussion. \nYou can watch the event video here: \n \n

DESCRIPTION:Does Germany do it Better? \nAward-winning author\, commentator\, broadcaster and cultural leader John Kampfner will be talking to the BGA about his new book\, Why the Germans do it Better (out on 27 August). \nJohn began his journalistic career as a foreign correspondent with the Daily Telegraph\, first in East Berlin where he reported on the fall of the Wall and unification of Germany\, and then in Moscow at the time of the collapse of Soviet Communism. \nHe went on to become Chief Political Correspondent at the FT and political commentator for the BBC’s Today programme and Newsnight. As Editor of the New Statesman from 2005 to 2008\, he took the magazine to 30-year circulation highs. He was Society of Magazine Editors Current Affairs Editor of the Year in 2006. \nJohn established the Creative Industries Federation to much acclaim in 2014\, providing a single voice for the UK’s creative sector. For eight years he was founder Chair of Turner Contemporary\, one of the country’s most successful art galleries. He is now Chair of the House of Illustration. He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate for his services to the arts by Bath Spa University in 2019. \nHe now writes weekly for the Times and appears regularly in other newspapers such as the FT\, Guardian and New European. He frequently appears on the BBC and Sky. He has made a number of programmes for BBC Radio 4. \nFluent in German and Russian\, he regularly speaks at political conferences and cultural festivals around the world. \nThe discussion will be chaired by Rüdiger Görner\, Professor of German with Comparative Literature at Queen Mary University of London and Founding Director of the Centre for Anglo-German Cultural Relations. Between 1999 and 2004 he was Director of the Institute of Germanic Studies where he founded the Ingeborg Bachmann Centre for Austrian Literature. He has published studies on Hölderlin’s poetics\, the Goethezeit\, Austrian literature from Stifter to Thomas Bernhard\, on Rainer Maria Rilke and Thomas Mann and his notion of finality in culture as well as studies on literary aesthetics. \nRüdiger is a Visiting Fellow of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science and held Visiting Professorships at the Universities of Mainz\, Hanover\, Heidelberg\, Vienna and Salzburg. He is a member of various advisory boards of cultural institutions\, publishing houses and academic journals. As a literary critic he writes for some of the leading journals in Germany\, Austria and Switzerland\, including Die Zeit\, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung\, Die Presse and Neue Zürcher Zeitung. \nIn 2017 he received the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (Bundesverdienstkreuz) in recognition of his achievements in developing Anglo-German Relations. \nThere will be an opportunity to ask questions of the speakers after the discussion. \nYou can watch the event video here: \n \n

DESCRIPTION:Beethoven: Classic or Contrarian?\nHow should Beethoven be celebrated in the 21st century? \nThis year marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of Ludwig van Beethoven. Join the BGA on Zoom on Thursday 30 July at 6pm BST to mark this special occasion together with the Royal College of Music! \nHow far does Beethoven’s work reflect the Viennese classical tradition\, and how far does it challenge established norms? How should the composer be celebrated in the 21st century? \nMalte Boecker will give a talk on Beethoven’s life and legacy. Mr Boecker is the Director of the Beethoven Haus in Bonn\, Germany and Artistic Director of the Beethoven Anniversary Society\, which is in charge of coordinating and marketing Beethoven’s 250th anniversary in 2020 on behalf of the German Federal Government\, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia\, the Rhein-Sieg Kreis and the city of Bonn. Previously Mr Boecker worked for the Bertelsmann Foundation and for the artistic directorship of the 1999 European Capital of Culture (Weimar). In this context\, he helped found the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra\, initiated by Daniel Barenboim and Edward Said. \nThe event will be chaired by Caterina Grewe\, a German-Japanese Pianist and Professor of Piano at the Royal College of Music\, London. Ms Grewe has performed to great critical acclaim throughout the UK\, continental Europe and Asia as a Steinway Artist. She has given recitals in venues such as the Royal Albert Hall\, Steinway Hall London and Hamburg\, and at venues in Dublin\, Barcelona\, and Moscow amongst others. Ms Grewe has also given recitals which were broadcast by the BBC\, the NDR in Hamburg and France Musique in Paris. DESCRIPTION:The BGA warmly invites you to attend an online event hosted by the German Embassy and organised jointly by the German and French embassies and the Delegation of the European Union to the United Kingdom\, in cooperation with the British Government and E3G. \n\n\nThe COVID-19 crisis has posed unprecedented challenges to economies around the globe. It has profoundly disrupted daily lives\, communities and the global economy and requires an unparalleled response. If anything\, COVID-19 has once again highlighted the need for international and European cooperation during crises and beyond. Major economies\, particularly in Europe\, bear a responsibility to keep climate action at the heart of a COVID-19 recovery ahead of COP26. \nThis stakeholder event is organised by the German and French embassies and the Delegation of the European Union to the United Kingdom\, in cooperation with the British Government. It will be hosted by the German Embassy and E3G during E3G’s virtual London Climate Action Week and will bring together a wide range of perspectives on what a green recovery means at EU and domestic levels in Germany\, France and the UK. \nThis webinar is part of the virtual London Climate Action Week hosted by E3G. Due to COVID-19 London Climate Action Week 2020 will take place in two instalments across the year. London Climate Action Week Digital will run from 1-3 July. SUMMARY:The German Constitutional Court and the European Central Bank: earthquake or tremor?
DESCRIPTION:The German Constitutional Court’s decision on PSPP: constitutional earthquake? \nIn its judgment pronounced on 5 May\, the Second Senate of the German Federal Constitutional Court granted several constitutional complaints directed against the Public Sector Purchase Programme (PSPP) of the European Central Bank (ECB). \nWe are joined by three panellists to consider how the decision fits with the other major European Monetary Union decisions and ongoing questions concerning the role of the European Central Bank; the broader economic implications of the German Federal Constitutional Court’s decision for the ECB’s independence and for the Pandemic Emergency Purchase Programme; as well as other constitutional questions such as the relationship between the German Constitutional Court and the European Court of Justice\, including the role of judicial dialogue in the EU constitutional order. \nProfessor Catherine Barnard\, who will chair the discussion\, is a Professor of EU law and Employment Law\, a Senior Tutor at Trinity College\, Cambridge\, and a senior fellow at UK in a Changing Europe. \nProfessor Michael Waibel is a Professor of International Law at the University of Vienna. We will be refunding members in full for their tickets.  \nEvent information: \nJoin us for a backstage tour of the Natural History Museum! \nThis will be an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour with curators and scientists from the Natural History Museum. We will be treated to seeing treasures\, such as the stunning Blaschka glass models. More than 10\,000 were created by the German father-and-son team Leopold and Rudolf Blaschka in the nineteenth century. Then we will be shown the spirit collection with specimens collected by Charles Darwin himself\, the rare books library and the museum’s mineral collection\, which is one of the most important and comprehensive collections of its type in the world. \nThe tour will be followed by drinks at Stein’s\, for those who would like to stay on for a Q&A with the curators. \nThis event is for BGA members only.  \nPlease note that we will be meeting at the entrance on Exhibition Road.  \nMEMBERS’ TICKETS

We will be refunding members in full for their tickets.  \nEvent information: \nCharles Grant is Director of the Centre for European Reform\, which he helped found in 1996. He works on\, among other subjects\, EU foreign and defence policy\, Russia\, China\, the euro and Britain’s relationship with the EU. During the time of German reunification in 1990 he was bureau chief of The Economist in Brussels. \nCharles Moore is a former editor of The Daily Telegraph\, The Spectator and The Sunday Telegraph. He is best known for his authorised biography of Margaret Thatcher\, published in three volumes. \nHelene von Bismarck is a historian\, writer and public speaker. Her main interest is Britain’s role in international relations during the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. She is currently working on a new research project about Margaret Thatcher and Jacques Delors. \nTogether\, they will discuss the run-up to German reunification in 1990. Where might there be windows for deepening bilateral ties? How can Germany and the UK continue to co-operate on the European and world stage? Where are the opportunities to work together to tackle global challenges?  \nDr Röttgen is Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the German Bundestag. He served as the German Federal Minister for the Environment\, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety from 2009 until 2012. He has been a Member of the Bundestag since 1994\, and is a senior member the Christian Democratic Party (CDU). Dr Röttgen is a strategic and influential thinker and speaker on international and European issues.  \nThe lecture will be held in English in the Locarno Suite at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office\, King Charles Street\, London SW1A 2AH\, and will be followed by a reception. DESCRIPTION:This year\, the German Basic Law (Grundgesetz) celebrates its 70th birthday. It was introduced in 1949 as a provisional legal framework for post-War Germany. It has become a cornerstone of the Federal Republic. \nThere is no single British constitutional document. Constitutional customs have evolved over time in the UK without necessarily being written down.  \nWhat are the merits of constitutions generally\, and what are the pros and cons of written constitutions? What factors account for the Basic Law’s enduring success\, and what challenges\, if any\, does it now face? Is the UK’s unwritten constitution fit for purpose in a time of political and social division\, and what role should judges play in interpreting it? \nThe BGA and BGJA are honoured to host two leading constitutional judges to discuss these and other questions. \nProf. Dr. Peter M. Huber is a Supreme Court Justice on the Bundesverfassungsgericht (German Federal Constitutional Court)\, the highest court in Germany for constitutional issues. From 2003-2004\, he served as an expert member of the Commission on the Reform of the Federal System of Government established by the German Federal Legislature. In 2009-2010\, he was Interior Minister in Thüringen. Born in 1959\, Prof. Huber studied law at Ludwig-Maximilians University Munich and at the Université de Genève. \nJonathan\, Lord Mance was Deputy President of the Supreme Court in 2017 and 2018\, having become a Justice of the Supreme Court on its formation in 2009. Lord Mance sat on the Council of Europe’s Consultative Council of European Judges\, becoming its first elected chair from 2000 to 2003. DESCRIPTION:On 28 June 1919 the Treaty of Peace between the allied and the associated powers and Germany was signed in the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles. Professor Alan Sharp\, one of the most eminent historians in the field\, will take a centennial perspective of the Versaille Settlement. Series editor of the 32-volume Makers of the Modern World: the peace conferences of 1919-23 and their aftermath\, Professor Sharp sets the consequences into their long-term context. He argues that the responsibility for Euope’s continuing interwar instability cannot be wholly attributed to the peacemakers of 1919-23. \n \n  \nAlan Sharp was Professor of International Studies and Provost of the Coleraine campus of the University of Ulster. He was therefore Ambassador at the time of the fall of the Berlin Wall\, the thirtieth anniversary of which we celebrate this year. His memoirs\, “Living the Cold War\,” are due out shortly in paperback. \nSir Paul Lever KCMG was British Ambassador to Germany between 1997 and 2003\, and is the longest-serving Ambassador to united Germany. He was Ambassador at the time that the capital of Germany moved from Bonn to Berlin. His book\, “Berlin Rules\,” is required reading for anyone seeking to understand modern Germany. \n  \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nThe discussion will take place at the Traveller’s Club\, 106 Pall Mall\, London SW1Y 5EP\, on Tuesday 2 April.
