SUMMARY:German Baking - In Conversation with Jürgen Krauss
DESCRIPTION:Ready to impress with your Lebkuchen\, Weihnachtsplätzchen and Stollen baking skills? On Wednesday 29 November from 6.30 to 7.30pm on Zoom we are joined by Jürgen Krauss for a talk on German baking. \nJürgen was the star of Bake Off 2021\, his semi-finals departure triggering over 100 complaints from dismayed viewers. His love for baking began during his childhood in the Black Forest. His travels across Europe\, before settling in Brighton\, UK\, widened his culinary influences\, but also gave him the yearning to master German bread-making\, the perfect showcase for both his technical precision and creative flavours. \nIn August\, Jürgen’s cook book German Baking – Cakes\, tarts\, traybakes and breads from the Black Forest and beyond came out. According to the publisher this fool-proof collection of recipes is a must-have for his many fans and provides delicious inspiration for any time of day and any occasion. In this online discussion\, he will take us through some of the recipes and discuss his love for all things baked. \nJürgen will be in discussion with Luisa Weiss. She is the author of Classic German Baking (2016) and the upcoming Classic German Cooking (10/24). Her memoir My Berlin Kitchen was published in 2012. She is the author of the Letter from Berlin newsletter on Substack. Luisa lives in Berlin with her husband and two sons. \nYou can watch the event video here: \n

SUMMARY:Out of the Darkness - In Conversation with Professor Frank Trentmann
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Tuesday 7 November from 6.30pm GMT at the London School of Economics for a conversation between our Chairman Peter Barnes and Professor Frank Trentmann on his new book Out of the Darkness: The Germans\, 1942–2022\, a groundbreaking new history of the people at the centre of Europe\, from the Second World War to today. \nIn this book Trentmann tells the dramatic story of the Germans from the middle of the Second World War\, through the Cold War and the division into East and West\, to the fall of the Berlin Wall and the reunited nation’s search for a place in the world. Their journey is marked by extraordinary moral struggles: guilt\, shame and limited amends; wealth versus welfare; tolerance versus racism; compassion and complicity. Through a range of voices – German soldiers and German Jews; environmentalists and coal miners; families and churches; volunteers\, migrants and populists – Trentmann paints a remarkable and surprising portrait over 80 years of the conflicted people at the centre of Europe. \nThe event will be hosted jointly with the LSESU German Society. \nFrank Trentmann is Professor of History at Birkbeck\, University of London\, and at the University of Helsinki. He is the author of Empire of Things and Free Trade Nation\, was a Moore Scholar at Caltech and has been awarded the Whitfield Prize\, the Austrian Science Book Prize\, the Humboldt Prize for Research and the 2023 Bochum Historians’ Prize. He grew up in Hamburg and lives in London. \nA recording of this event is available below. \n

DESCRIPTION:Join us on 24 October from 6.30 to 7.30 pm BST for an online discussion with John Kampfner\, the Sunday Times bestselling author of Why the Germans Do It Better\, on his latest book In Search of Berlin. This is an 800-year story of Berlin\, a dialogue between past and present; it is a new way of looking at this turbulent and beguiling city on its never-ending journey of reinvention. John will be in discussion with Olivia Judson\, an evolutionary biologist and writer. \nJohn Kampfner is an award-winning author\, broadcaster and foreign-affairs commentator. He began his career reporting from East Berlin (during the fall of the Wall) and Moscow (during the collapse of communism) for the Telegraph. SUMMARY:German regional elections in Bavaria and Hesse - What do the results mean?
DESCRIPTION:Join us on 12 October from 6 to 7pm BST (7 to 8pm German time) on Zoom for an event with the International Association for the Study of German Politics to discuss the results of the German regional elections in Bavaria and Hesse. Four of the country’s 16 federal states were facing elections this year\, including Berlin and Bremen. \nState elections are important in Germany for three main reasons.  First\, states have significant power over policy\, including for instance education\, criminal justice and economic development.  Secondly\, they are an important barometer of public opinion and the standing of political parties. Thirdly\, state governments are represented in Germany’s Upper House\, the Bundesrat\, which has a veto on any national laws which affect the states. At a time when Olaf Scholz’ “traffic light” coalition is not polling well and there are growing worries about the strength of the far-right AfD\, these elections are particularly significant. \nThe session will take the form of a discussion with two leading experts\, followed by a Q&A to which all attendees are invited to contribute. \nSpeakers: Michèle Auga\, Director of the London Office of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation and Jochen Müller\, Professor of Political Sociology\, University of Greifswald. \nChair: Dr Ed Turner\, Reader in Politics\, Aston University\, and chair of the International Association for the Study of German Politics \nYou can watch the event video here: \n

DESCRIPTION:Join us on Monday 22 May for a conversation with Sir Christopher Clark on his new book\, Revolutionary Spring: Fighting for a New World 1848-1849\, a dazzling account of 1848\, the year when seemingly out of a clear blue sky virtually every European state was overwhelmed by revolution. It marked a turning point that shaped much of modern European history\, a year with which Clark draws explicit parallels with unrest in Europe today. \nChristopher Clark is one of the most revered historians of 19th century continental Europe working today\, and author of the international bestseller Sleepwalkers\, published 2012. He is Regius Professor of History at the University of Cambridge and his books include The Politics of Conversion\, Kaiser Wilhelm II\, Iron Kingdom\, Time and Power and Prisoners of Time. He was knighted in 2015. \nThe event is generously being hosted by the Austrian Embassy and will take place at 18 Belgrave Square\, London\, SW1X 8PQ. Doors will open at 6pm BST for a 6.30pm start. The discussion will last an hour and will be followed by a reception. The event will conclude at 9pm. \nYou can watch the event video here:
