Join us on Monday, 22 September 2025 for an evening talk with Rick Jones at 6pm, exploring the rich and often overlooked history of St George’s German Lutheran Church—the oldest surviving German Church in Britain, dating back to 1762-63. Founded by Dederich Beckmann, a prosperous sugar boiler, the church became a vital spiritual and cultural hub for German immigrants working in Whitechapel’s sugar refineries, butcher shops, and bakeries. Known as Little Germany, this East End enclave thrived until the First World War brought drastic change in 1915.
You’ll also experience a demonstration of the church’s rare Walcker organ, the only one of its kind in the UK.
Following the talk, we welcome anyone who is interested to join us at a nearby pub for more conversation and connection.
