Understanding Germany’s Healthcare System

In this episode, Professor Reinhard Busse talks to the BGA about Germany’s healthcare system.

Professor Reinhard Busse is department head for health care management in the Faculty of Economics and Management at the Technische Universität Berlin. He is also a faculty member of Charité, Berlin’s medical faculty, as well as Associate Head of Research Policy and Head of the Berlin Hub at the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies. His research focuses on methods and contents of comparative health system analysis, health services research and health economics. His department has been designated as a WHO Collaborating Centre for Health System Research and Management. Since 2011, he is editor-in-chief of the international peer reviewed journal Health Policy.

Understanding Germany’s Education System

In this episode, Jack Stallworthy MBE talks to the BGA about Germany’s education system.

Jack Stallworthy has been working at the British Embassy in Berlin since 2018, where he is responsible for education, health, labour and social affairs. His job entails understanding German domestic and international policy approaches in these fields, including where the UK might want to learn from the German experience. Jack is in regular contact both with the Department of Education at home, as well as Germany’s federal and state education ministries.

Understanding the German Constitution and Federal Constitutional Court

In this episode, Dr Markus Gehring speaks to the BGA about the German Constitution and Federal Constitutional Court.

Markus Gehring is an EU and International Sustainable Development lawyer. He is both Fellow and Director of Studies in Law at Hughes Hall, Cambridge, and Deputy Director of the Centre for European Legal Studies. Markus is also a Founding Fellow of the Cambridge Centre for Environment, Energy and Natural Resources Governance (CEENRG) and a Fellow of the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law (LCIL). He also taught German Constitutional and Administrative Law at the Faculty of Law at Hamburg University in Germany.

Understanding Germany’s Media Landscape

In this episode, Professor Barbara Thomaß speaks to the BGA about Germany’s media landscape.

Barbara Thomaß is a Professor at the Institute for Media Studies at the University of Bochum in Germany. Her main fields of interests are media systems in Eastern and Western Europe, broadcasting policies, media in processes of democratisation and transformation, and media and journalism ethics. She is a member of the administrative council of the ZDF, the national public service broadcaster in Germany, and head of the board of the Akademie für Publizistik.

Understanding German Federalism

In this episode, Dr Ed Turner speaks to the BGA about German federalism.

Ed is Reader in Politics at Aston University, Co-Director of the Aston Centre for Europe and a Research Fellow of the Foreign Policy Centre. He is particularly interested in German politics, especially political parties and federalism, and also politics in the UK and in comparative perspective. Ed wrote his doctorate about the impact of political parties on public policy at the sub-national level in Germany. He is acting Chair of the International Association for the Study of German Politics.
