Introducing the Warburg Institute
On 21 May 2025 from 4.30pm to 6.00pm, BGA members are invited to a visit to the Warburg Institute . The Warburg Institute is one of the world’s leading centres for the study of art and culture. Its collections, courses and programmes are dedicated to the study of global cultural history and the role of images in society. Founded in Hamburg at the turn of the twentieth century by historian Aby Warburg (1866-1929), the Institute was established to trace the roots of the Renaissance in ancient civilisations and ended up changing the way we see the world around us. There will be a tour of its newly refurbished premises and its director, Professor Bill Sherman, and his colleagues will introduce the institute’s work and its history. The Institute is named after its founder Aby Warburg. In 1913 Warburg was joined by Fritz Saxl (1890-1948) who, in 1921, turned the library into a research institute. The Institute was exiled to London when the Nazis came to power in 1933 and became part of the University of London in 1944.
This event is now fully booked. If you wish to have a place on the waiting list, please email Tamara at [email protected].
